*A Lesson on Rotary Growth – The Young Professionals Conference – East Bay

Held on April 1, 2017 at the Roundhouse Conference Center, San Ramon

On the Saturday morning of April 1st, close to 150 young professionals, corporate, community and civic leaders of all generations represented the diverse demographics of the Greater East Bay came to attend the first Young Professionals Conference held in the East Bay. They were Rotarians, Rotaractors and Non-Rotarians who came to grow new and engaged connections, to grow their personal and career development and accomplishments, and to grow ideas on how to be the best, by doing the most good.  (The YPC Program and pictures are attached.)

The success of the Conference was attributed to the joint teamwork of Millennials, GenX and Baby Boomers of District 5160, Rotary 680 Corridor, Rotaractors, and Non-Rotarians; impactful Speakers such as Mayor Bill Clarkson on Community, Jeremy Bates on the 5 Why’s, Mitty Chang on the 3 Tries, the father/son team of Jim and Blake Marggraff spoke on Lessons for Growth and the Next Generation Perspectives. Diverse speakers came from Google, Kaiser, PG&E, RHI, RES, Spectrum, EBEDA, Rotary, and the like – talking on topics of the economic climate, housing, business, finance, talent, and how diverse communities make for strong social impact. The financial support from our corporate and community Sponsors including Bishop Ranch, UC Davis, Discovery Homes, and others helped us to provide a stellar venue.  Danielle Lallement was great as she emceed the event which began with an introduction of the Conference Leaders Jane Louie, Kimberly Nicola and Pat Burgess, to end with a Thank You Mixer, and a message to watch for more things to come. As a result, the following new relationships and project initiatives have formed, including:

·          Joint charitable projects – UC Davis Rotaractors and UC Davis Challenge for Charity

·         Mentorships with Club Members – E-Club, Rotaractors, and Young Professionals

·         Community, Corporate and Civic Collaborations – include the Chambers of Commerce

·         The East Bay Economic Development Alliance invited all to their Economic Update

·         The Innovation Tri-Valley invited all to engage with their panel on Affordable Housing

·         Companies, startups, and accelerators like BRIIA-Bishop Ranch Intelligent Innovation Accelerator are reaching out to young professional

·         A Google Group for collaboration was formed:

§  Group:  Young Professionals Conference Community

§  Email:   [email protected]

·         The EBEDA Economic Update, and the April 2017 US Census Young Adults were provided

To the Rotary District 5160 and Rotary International, the YP Conference was a natural progression from the District Conference a week before which included the Young Professionals and Rotaractors, to the RI Rotaractor Pre-Convention, and the young professional Rotarians at the main RI Convention in June. Some of the YPC Speakers and Conference Leaders will be in all three forums.

Several Rotarians on the 680 Team are looking to form follow-up, half-day Seminars to build on the theme to Empower, Equip and Engage with relevant programming, social events, partnerships, and other programs, to be the best by doing the most good.
